Two NYPD Officers Hospitalized After Fire

Two New York City police officers are listed in critical condition after a suspicious fire in Coney Island.

Authorities say the two officers, 36 year old Rosa Rodriguez and 38 year old Dennis Guerra, were overcome by smoke after getting off an elevator on the 13th floor of a Surf Avenue building.

"Fire department personel arrived at the building and made their way up to the 13th floor where they located both police officers unconscious and unresponsive," said NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton.

The firefighters pulled the officers back into the elevator and brought them downstairs where they received treatment from EMS personel.

Rodriguez was brought to Weill Cornell Medical Center, while Guerra was taken to Jacobi Medical Center.  Both are listed in critical condition.

Mayor Bill de Blasio says this is a reminder of the dangers faced by NYPD officers.

"It's incredibly difficult work that these men and women do," de Blasio said.  "I can say this on behalf of all New Yorkers, our hearts go out to these families.  We will stand by them."

Bratton says the cause of the fire is suspicious and it's being investigated.
