New York City mayoral candidate Bill Thompson has found himself defending comments he made via Twitter about the George Zimmerman trial verdict. Shortly after Zimmerman was found not-guilty of second-degree murder and manslaughter in the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, Thompson tweeted to his over 4,000 Twitter followers.
“Trayvon Martin was killed because he was black. There was no justice done today in Florida," @BillThompsonNYC tweeted. According to the New York Daily News, some were critical of Thompson's comments. Thompson, the only African-American NYC mayoral candidate defended his tweet on Monday.
“I don’t think it was an overstatement at all,” Thompson said via the Daily News. “If you listened and looked at the trial, it was an unfortunate statement of fact.”
